Teeth Whitening Facts

Teeth whitening with gel filled trays that are placed over your teeth is an effective way to whiten teeth by 2-5 shades. The ingredient in the gel, carbamide peroxide, is broken down and is absorbed by the tooth’s enamel and bleaches the colored substances. Nothing in the tooth’s structure is changed at all; only the tooth is made brighter and whiter.

This treatment is long lasting. As long as you keep your exposure to staining products (coffee, red wine, etc.) to a minimum, you shouldn’t have to have a follow-up for 4-5 months.

When wearing the trays Carbamide Peroxide is slowly broken down to Hydrogen Peroxide which whitens the teeth. The 16% gel whitens more slowly but causes less tooth sensitivity. The 22% gel whitens quickly but can cause temporary sensitivity to temperatures. Both the 16% and 22% gels need to be worn for about 10-14 days to achieve maximum whiteness.
Virtually everyone who whitens their teeth will see improvement.
